Can someone please help me with this scripture. Matthew 16:18. My area of study is the definition of Gates of Hell and Prevail. Any help would be appreciated.
Gate can be used to hold something in or keep somethng out. It is a movable barrier. Prevail simply means to succeed, overcome or overpower, to attain a desired object or end. You can look at this from two standpoints defensive and offensive. The gates of hell will not prevail, meaning simply that when satan and his demonic forces come against the church they will fail and when the church comes up against the work of satan, the church will succeed because the gates of hell will not hold the church back from breaking through.
